It's 2026, and Overwatch 2 has been on a rollercoaster ride with its seasonal content. Seasons 7 and 8 brought a ton of new stuff—events, heroes, cosmetics, you name it—and players have generally been pretty happy. But there's this one big, empty space that's been glaringly obvious for a while now: the PvE story missions. Remember those? The ones that were supposed to be a huge part of the whole Overwatch 2 experience? Yeah, those have been MIA for a couple of seasons, and it's starting to feel like a real missed opportunity.

Let's rewind a bit. The jump from the original Overwatch to Overwatch 2 was... messy, to say the least. A lot of fans felt like it wasn't different enough to be called a full sequel. Blizzard's big promise back then was a massive, replayable PvE campaign with skill trees for every hero and deep story stuff. That promise got a lot of people excited! But then, well, plans changed. The big campaign got scaled way back into smaller story missions that, while cool, don't have much reason to play more than once or twice.
We finally got our first taste of these missions in Season 6, a whole 10 months after the game launched. And what did we get? Just three missions:
-
Resistance (set in Rio de Janeiro) 🏖️
-
Liberation (set in Toronto) 🍁
-
Ironclad (set in Gothenburg) ⚙️
That's it. Three missions since the game came out in 2022. It's no wonder the community keeps asking, "Where's the rest of the story?" These missions gave us awesome lore and made the world feel alive, but then they just... stopped.
So, What Happened in Seasons 7 & 8?
You can kinda see why they took a break. Season 7 was all about the Halloween Terror event and a wild crossover with Diablo. Trying to fit a serious, canon story mission into a season full of spooky skins and demons from another game would've been pretty weird. It was a fun season, but story-wise, it was a detour.
Then came Season 8: Call of the Hunt. This season had a mythological beast theme and, most importantly, introduced the game's newest tank: Mauga, the charismatic Samoan cyborg. 🦾 Introducing a new hero is a big deal. The meta shifts, strategies change, and everyone needs time to learn how to play with (and against) them. Dedicating the season to Mauga's launch made sense from a gameplay perspective.
But here's the thing: that excuse only works for so long.
Why Season 9 is THE Perfect Time for a PvE Revival
Seasons 7 and 8 were fun distractions, but now it's 2026. The game has settled. Players have mastered Mauga (or learned to counter him!). The Halloween decorations are packed away. It's time to get back to the core narrative.
Season 9 needs to bring back PvE Story Missions, and it needs to do it in a big way.
This isn't just about adding content; it's about giving Overwatch 2 its own unique identity. The PvP is great, but what sets it apart from other shooters is its world and characters. Story missions are the best way to explore that.
And guess what? They have the perfect hook already built-in: Mauga. 🤯
Imagine a new story mission that dives into his backstory. How did he become a cyborg? What's his connection to Talon or other heroes? Playing a mission as Mauga, or alongside him, would be an incredible way to make players care about him beyond just his kit in Competitive mode. It would flesh him out as a character, not just a gameplay option.

The community's patience is wearing thin. The whole PvE saga has been the game's biggest controversy. Every season that passes without a new story mission just reminds players of those broken initial promises. Blizzard has done a good job recently with events and heroes, but to truly win back trust and show they're committed to the world of Overwatch, they need to deliver on this front.
What Could a Season 9 Story Mission Look Like?
It doesn't have to be a giant, 10-hour campaign. Even one new, substantial mission would be a win. Here are some ideas that would get players hyped:
-
A Mission Focused on Mauga: As mentioned, this is low-hanging fruit with huge potential.
-
Advancing the Omnic Crisis Plot: What's happening with Null Sector? The last missions hinted at bigger conflicts.
-
Exploring New Locations: We've seen Rio, Toronto, and Gothenburg. How about a mission in:
-
Ilios 🇬🇷 (sun-drenched streets and ancient ruins)
-
Busan 🇰🇷 (high-tech MEKA base defense)
-
Oasis (a chaotic fight in the futuristic city)
-
-
Introducing Co-op Mechanics: Add simple skill-tree-like upgrades just for the mission to give a taste of the original PvE vision.
Blizzard has shown they can make fun, cinematic PvE content with the three missions we have. The foundation is there. Season 9 is the moment to build on it. More maps and heroes are always welcome, but story missions are the soul of the game's universe. It's time to feed that soul again. Let's hope the developers are listening, because in 2026, Overwatch 2's story deserves to move forward.
