I’ve been living and breathing Overwatch Season 1 since the update dropped, and I can tell you the meta has been absolute chaos. So when associate game director Alec Dawson confirmed on February 20 that nerfs are coming for two of the most banned heroes in the game, I wasn’t exactly shocked. The writing has been on the wall for a while. Jetpack Cat and Domina have been running the show, and now the dev team is finally stepping in.

Season 1 didn’t just tweak numbers; it introduced five new heroes. That kind of shake-up always creates a few monsters, and this time the monsters are a flying support cat and a tank that refuses to die. In competitive, players have been using the ban system like a shield, and both heroes have become regulars on the chopping block.
Jetpack Cat Is Getting Her Claws Clipped ✂️
Dawson sat down with Deemzies on February 20 and dropped the news that Jetpack Cat is first in line for nerfs. Specifically, the team is targeting her Perks: Claws Out and Territorial.
'So we’re going to be nerfing those sometime early next week, and in the mid-season we’ll perhaps be adding a new Perk and getting rid of the Territorial as well,' Dawson explained. 'The amount of aggression she has right now, you know, [she can] fly at someone, use the claws, press the E, and she can be very lethal in a pretty short window. So we want to pull that out just a tad.'
That quote sums up exactly why I’ve been banning her in my own ranked games. Jetpack Cat can dive in, shred a squishy, and zip out before anyone can react. As a support player, I love having that kind of playmaking power on my team — but playing against it? No cap, it feels straight-up unfair. The nerfs sound like they’ll trim her burst without gutting her entirely, which is probably the right call.
The mid-season change is even more interesting. Removing Territorial and adding a new Perk could completely change how she’s built. Territorial has been a huge part of her hold-a-room identity, so saying goodbye to it will force players to adapt. I’m curious to see what the new Perk brings to the table.
Domina Is Also on the Nerf List 🛡️
Jetpack Cat isn’t the only hero getting attention. Dawson also confirmed that Domina, the Tank that has been dominating Season 1, is going to be toned down.
'Domina has a high ban rate as well, I mean, she’s pretty strong [at] launch. We’re going to be looking at some things to tone her down as well,' he said.
He didn’t give specifics, and he didn’t give a date. But the next big update is the mid-Season 1 patch, which is expected sometime in March. That means Domina’s changes could land then, alongside Jetpack Cat’s Perk adjustments.
As a tank enjoyer, I’ve seen Domina take over games. She’s got the kind of kit that makes you feel unstoppable, and that’s exactly why her ban rate is through the roof. When a hero is that strong at launch, the dev team has to walk a fine line. Nerf her too hard and she becomes useless; nerf her too soft and she keeps warping the meta.
Here’s a quick breakdown of what we know so far:
| Hero | Role | Why She’s a Problem | Confirmed Changes | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jetpack Cat | Support | High aggression, Claws Out and Territorial, frequent competitive bans | Nerfs to Claws Out and Territorial; possible new Perk and removal of Territorial | Early next week; mid-season for larger changes |
| Domina | Tank | High ban rate, strong at launch, dominates tank role | Being toned down; specifics unknown | Likely mid-Season 1 patch in March |
What This Means for the Meta 🧠
I think these nerfs are a necessary evil. Season 1 has been a wild west of new heroes, and the ban system has been doing a lot of heavy lifting. When two heroes are must-bans, the game starts to feel stale. You see the same picks, the same strategies, the same complaints in chat. Pulling Jetpack Cat and Domina down a peg should open the door for other supports and tanks to shine.
That said, I hope the devs don’t overcorrect. Jetpack Cat’s mobility and aggression are what make her fun. Domina’s durability is what makes her a tank. The goal should be balance, not erasure. Dawson’s comment about pulling Jetpack Cat’s aggression 'out just a tad' gives me some hope. It sounds like they’re going for small, targeted changes rather than swinging the nerf hammer wildly.
The mid-season patch could also bring more than just nerfs. If the team adds a new Perk for Jetpack Cat and removes Territorial, we might see a whole new playstyle emerge. I’m already theorycrafting what that could look like. Maybe a more team-oriented Perk? Or something that rewards careful positioning instead of dive-bombing the backline? Only time will tell.
My Final Take 🔥
I’ll be keeping a close eye on the next update, especially since the mid-Season 1 patch is expected in March. If you’re a Jetpack Cat or Domina main, now is the time to enjoy them while they’re still cracked. If you’re like me and you’ve been banning them every match, your days of relief are coming.
Overwatch is always a rollercoaster, and Season 1 has been one heck of a ride. Nerfs are coming, the meta is shifting, and I’m here for it. Just remember: it’s only a game. Don’t get too bent out of shape when your favorite hero gets tuned. Touch grass, queue up, and adapt. That’s the Overwatch way.
